Like the name of its new album, the Revivalists will be “Men Amongst Mountains” this weekend, performing in the Sierra Nevada and Rocky Mountains.
The seven-piece band from New Orleans will headline Saturday’s Day 1 at the Brews, Jazz and Funk Fest at Squaw Valley and on Sunday it will play at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado. The Revivalists will gear up for the mountain shows with an appearance Friday at Outside Lands festival in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park.
The dog days of summer are here with a three=day run like that. The Squaw Valley show is a fundraiser for the Humane Society. Entry is free, but a $5 donation is encouraged. The Village at Squaw Valley is always dog friendly. More than 40 beers will be available at the annual event.
Pedal steel guitar player Ed Williams described his band’s sound to Tahoe Onstage before a performance at High Sierra Music Festival: “We’re just kind of a rock band with a New Orleans branch to it to: jazz, gospel and other stuff like that. But basically we play rock music with layers of that other stuff.”
The players met during their college days at Tulane and Loyola in New Orleans. The Revivalists are fronted by high-energy and charismatic singer David Shaw, an Ohio native who chided this reporter for being a Michigan fan. Also in the group: Zack Feinberg, guitar; Andrew Campanelli, drums; George Gekas, bass; Rob Ingraham, saxophone; and Michael Girardot, keyboards and trumpet.
The Revivalists are a rock band but its percussion gives a taste of New Orleans.
“We all grew up on Led Zeppelin and The Beatles and we all have our separate influences,” Williams said. “We all grew up on rock music and that’s kind of what we play. The New Orleans’ flavor, that just kind of gets in there from living in New Orleans. That’s just going to happen.”
Released July 17, “Men Amongst Mountains,” is the band’s fourth album. It is the result of almost two weeks in Studio in the Country in Bogalusa, Louisiana.
