Vokab Kompany and Black Star Safari perform at Live at Lakeview Thursday, July 21, in South Lake Tahoe’s Lakeview Commons from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m..

Vokab Kompany is a San Diego based livetronica and hip-hop band formed by Robbie Gallo (aka Rob Hurt) and Matt Burke (aka Burkey Baby.) Expect funk, soul and glitch hop sounds to get you dancin’ on the beach. Vokab Kompany opened the Lake Tahoe Reggae Festival last year at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.

Robbie Gallo is a former South Lake Tahoe resident and his mother and brother still live here.

Black Star Safari is a rock and roll duo featuring Dan Green on guitar and vocals and Matt Mandella on drums and vocals. They play a mean “Black Betty” and add high-energy funk and a touch of folk to their shows. Green also grew up at South Shore. Black Star Safari is now based in the Sacramento area.

Vokab Kompany more than anything is a hip-hop group, but there are many different styles to the sound.

“We like so many kinds of music we didn’t just want to be a hip-hop band,” Gallo said. “We just are trying out what we like. … You do get invited to a lot of festivals because you cover all bases.”

A Vokab Kompany song is featured on Tahoe South’s commercial played throughout the California encouraging people to visit Lake Tahoe.

On Friday night, Vokab Kompany will perform at the American Legion Hall for Robbie Gallo and Robbie Jah’s Birthday Bonanza. The show starts at 9 p.m. and the cover is $7. Concertgoers must be 21 years old.
