Lake Tahoe residents, this one’s for you.
Carolyn Dolan and Peter Supersano will celebrate their recent album Wednesday along the banks of Lake Tahoe in the Valhalla Boathouse Theatre.
“How Deep is The Ocean” has 13 songs that celebrate 60 years of music. The songs can be considered standards but also have unique arrangements. Dolan and Supersano, a pianist, will be accompanied by Reno Jazz Orchestra members Dr. Andy Heglund, drums; Hans Halt, bass; Ronald Starr, sax; John Beckman, trumpet; and Rich Lewis, trombone. Each player with the exception of Beckman played on the album.
There will be two sets. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30. Concertgoers might consider arriving early to enjoy a shoreline picnic.
“The first set will have songs from the album and the second will have a more of an R&B Twist to it. We’re going to funk it up,” Dolan said.
In July 2014, an anonymous donor provided the opportunity for Dolan and Supersano to make a jazz album, and they cut no corners in the process. Esteemed recording engineer Tom Gordon offered his services and his Imirage Sound Lab in Sparks. Top jazz artists in the region contributed, including many members of the Reno Jazz Orchestra.
“I had a lot of suggestions and I picked the ones that I could get into,” Dolan said. “Some I had been doing for a long time.”
“I call the CD a crossover album because it’s not strictly jazz and not strictly blues,” Dolan said. “It’s a wide range of standard material from different eras, from big band to swing, to jump, Stevie Wonder and R&B.”
A longtime South Lake Tahoe resident, Dolan also plays with a rock and blues band, Big Red. Last fall, she was inducted into the Western Swing Society’s Hall of Fame in Sacramento The society recognized Dolan’s time fronting the band the Outpsyders.
The Reno Jazz Orchestra plays Monday night on the other side of the lake at Sand Harbor.
