It was classic. Rock ‘n’ roll all night long.
Anyone expecting a tribute to Prince might have been disappointed. The Greg Golden Band, though, did pump out a couple of Deep Purple covers, “Maybe I’m a Leo,” and the timeless “Smoke on the Water.”
The Reno-based rockers have become a staple at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Lake Tahoe, playing about once a month recently. They entertained a crowd of more than 200 on Saturday, and some fans danced the night away, including one bearded gentleman sporting a cowboy hat who managed to do the splits while holding a cold beverage level.
Band leader Greg Golden and fellow guitarist Jeff Montgomery provided hot licks, while singers Randy Scoles and Paul Holdgate belted out tunes. The two both performed with Montrose, as did hard-pounding drummer Steve Brown and bass player Larry Hart.
Covering artists as diverse as Credence Clearwater Revival, Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones, the band left no rock fan expecting more, tearing through a 32-song set list.
The Greg Golden Band also delivered music from an upcoming album, including “Into the Darkness” and “Hell or High Water.” Vocalists Scoles and Holdgate took turns at the microphone or worked in tandem on some songs.
Guest drummer Steve Price, a founding member of Pablo Cruise, checked in for two tunes midway through the performance, keeping the beat for covers of the Rolling Stones’ “Honky Tonk Women” and Credence’s “Fortunate Son.” Upon returning to the stage, the band’s own drummer, Steve Brown, paid homage to the visiting Steve Price, bowing down.
“I think he sold about 40 million records,” Holdgate told the audience.
At one point, the Greg Golden Band even predicted its own future with a rendition of “Heading Back to Reno,” but that didn’t happen until congertgoers were fully saturated with a night of good-old rock ‘n’ roll.
