If your gonna do wrong, buddy, do wrong right. There were gasps, guffaws and shaking heads when The Devil Makes Three, then four, then five, came onstage on Thursday, Dec. 29, in the South Shore Room at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe. The trio of musicians on the records — Pete Bernhard, Lucia Turino and Cooper McBean — play stringed instruments but they don’t comprise a traditional bluegrass band. Moreover, the inclusion of a drummer and a fiddle player shouldn’t have been a surprise. There also were five onstage during The Devil Makes Three’s previous South Shore appearance, January 2016 at MontBleu.
Playing a blend of ragtime and rockabilly, the band has always called itself an alt-country band, but bluegrass fans certainly love it, too. The general admission show was a sellout. Although a power outage that delayed the start, the crowd thoroughly enjoyed the show.
With a new full-length album, “Redemption & Ruin,” which was released on Sept. 16, The Devil Makes Three has just begun a national tour that will last until Feb. 4. Bernhard, Turino and McBean are Vermont natives who moved to California and started recording in 2002.
