When ALO (Animal Liberation Orchestra) took command of the stage at Crystal Bay Casino’s Crown Room last Saturday night, February 28th they immediately had everyone there dancing and singing aloud along with the group. The band started the first of two sets with older songs such as “Try” from their 2007 album Roses & Clover as guitarist Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz rocked his signature solos. Each member took turns doing the vocals as the group danced through a performance pulling from a variety of their catalog.

Having performed in the Lake Tahoe area consistently over the years and garnering a reputation for fun shows, ALO is a favorite band with the locals. Many people made beautiful handmade fabric Hearts – at least 50 of them! They were thrown on the stage to celebrate the “Tour D’Amour XIX” as hearts and love are the signature celebration of this tour.

ALO with guest Mimi Naja from Fruition

Mimi Naja from the band Fruition who opened up the show that evening, joined them up on the stage to sing her latest song “Time Card” and jam with the boys a bit. ALO did a lot of special tribute songs for musicians that were no longer with us, including a mention of Neil Sedaka who had passed the previous day before performing their take on “Love Will Keep Us Together” in Sedaka’s style, and a special tribute to Bob Weir with “Playing with the Band.”

As the second set came to life with their cover of The Beatles’ “Dirty Laundry,” Lebo jumped on top of one of the back amplifiers and did an outrageous guitar solo! All of the members of this band are extraordinary musicians.

Before they played one of their signature songs “Girl, I Wanna Lay You Down,” vocalist Zach Gill explained they were on a mission to raise awareness for more “Amore” in the world. They finished their set with a Steely Dan tune “Reelin’ In The Years” and “Friends” from Led Zeppelin.

What a memorable evening with ALO, with lots of love in the air. I hope that they return to the area very soon.
Thank you to Crystal Bay Casino for keeping the live music alive.
