Icelandic indie sensation Of Monsters and Men is bringing its folk-rock sound to Reno, appearing at Grand Sierra Resort on Thursday, April 14.
Of Monsters and Men is Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir (vocals, guitar, piano), Ragnar Þórhallsson (vocals, guitar, melodica, glockenspiel), Brynjar Leifsson (lead guitar, backing vocals), Kristján Páll Kristjánsson (bass, backing vocals), and Arnar Rósenkranz Hilmarsson (drums, percussion).
The group kicked off as an expansion of Hilmarsdóttir’s solo act in 2009 in Reykjavik, garnering increased attention after appearing at prominent music festivals in Iceland in 2010. Of Monsters and Men recorded and released a debut album in its home country in 2011, before being picked up by Universal for worldwide release. “My Head is an Animal” would go on to be certified Platinum and nominated for a number of awards, including Billboard Music Awards’ Top Rock Album.
The group followed up with 2015’s “Beneath My Skin,” certified Gold and peaking in the top 10 on numerous music charts in the United States and around the world. Film and TV appearances have followed the group’s global success, with original tunes appearing in “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” and AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” both in 2013.
The group tours regularly around the world, appearing in the United States in recent years at Bonnaroo and Coachella, among other music festivals. The band is playing a series of shows in Columbia, Buenos Aires, Argentina, and South Africa before heading to Reno to kick off a brief run through the states
Of Monsters and Men will appear in Los Angeles, Honolulu, and Indio, California, and then play a brief stop in Mexico City before winging off to Australia. Tickets for many of these shows already have sold out, according to the band’s website.
