Tahoe will get a wicked dose of one of Americana’s hottest acts when the Devil Makes Three sidles by MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa on Wednesday, Jan. 27.
Pete Bernhard (guitar, vocals), Lucia Torino (upright bass, vocals), and Cooper McBean (banjo, vocals) each hail from Vermont, but formed up as a string trio in Santa Cruz in the early 2000’s. The group released its independently recorded, self-titled debut in 2002.
The Devil Makes Three churns out an uproarious burst of American musical styles, usually with a distinctly up-tempo beat, and often with a darkly shaded humor or cynicism to the lyrics. The band’s aggressive blend of bluesy, old-timey folk, bluegrass, ragtime quickly captured the attention of fans across the country.
After another independent release in 2003’s “Longhorns, Boots and a Belt” and a live album in 2006, DM3 signed with Milan Records out of Los Angeles. The band rereleased its debut “The Devil Makes Three” in 2007, following up with “Do Wrong Right” in 2009. The trio’s most recent full-length album, “I’m a Stranger Here,” was released in October 2013.
Devil Makes Three tours regularly across the country, with performances at festivals like Austin City Limits, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, and many more. DM3 has appeared with artists such as Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Old Crow Medicine Show.
After the MontBleu show, Devil Makes Three is playing a series of shows around California, Arizona, and Texas before a string of early February appearances in New Orleans, Philadelphia, and New York City, Boston, and Washington, D.C.
