One of America’s hallmark rock acts of the last few decades will grace South Lake Tahoe Wednesday, when Dave Matthews Band plays Harveys Outdoor Arena.
Originally hailing from Johannesburg, South Africa, Matthews spent time in England and New York growing up, before settling in Charlottesville, Virginia in the late 1980s. It was there where he embarked on his musical career, playing a variety of local shows with guest musicians and as a guest himself. He also began writing heavily at that time, laying the groundwork for the sound and style that would become a wildly popular national act in short order.
He formed Dave Matthews Band in 1991, and began playing and recording, with hits like “Crash Into Me,” “Where Are You Going,” and “Grey Street,” among many others.
A known collaborator, Matthews has worked with a veritable army of musicians, from Emmylou Harris to Gov’t Mule, and from Jack Johnson to Blue Man Group. He worked at length with banjo great Bela Fleck, and often invites Fleck and his band mates Victor Wooten and Jeff Coffin onstage. Coffin has officially been a member of DMB since 2008.
Matthews has also played something of a political advocacy role, having performed, released music, or spoken out before each of the last three presidential elections. He has played at two Democratic National Conventions, as well as a number of concerts on behalf of President Barack Obama.
DMB is currently on tour around the Western United States, with a series of shows in California, Nevada and Arizona. The group will be headed overseas in October, playing in Abu Dhabi before a series of shows in Europe, including Lisbon, Madrid, Zurich and Milan.
Entitled “A Very Special Evening with the Dave Matthews Band,” the Wednesday show promises to be another highlight in a summer season that has included Brad Paisley, Aerosmith, and Elton John. The fine summer weather should continue, with a forecast of sun and temperatures in the low 80s. Expect another excellent performance from a top-tier act, as the Tahoe sunset’s crescendo of colors gives way to the deep purples and blues of the Sierra night sky.
