“Sing in a World That’s Falling Apart” and “Apocalypse Love”, the titles of two of the most recent full length albums by Athens, Georgia’s Black Lips, seem to encapsulate finding a sense of beauty in an uneasy and trepidatious time. Which seems fitting for a tour that overlaps with Halloween and election day, as well as summing up the band’s sound that sees layering elements of funk and psych rock over a foundation of discordant garage punk.
The band is known for embracing the strange into their sound and putting on a wild live show. Formed in 1999, the group has worked with producers like Mark Ronson and The Black Keys’ Patrick Carney, not to mention having a couple EPs released through Reno record label Slovenly Recordings, over the course of their 10 studio albums. As the group has incorporated elements of country, funk and fuzzed up twee into their music over the years, it’s the reverb heavy garage sound that tends to anchor each of their releases.
The group will perform at Crystal Bay Casino’s Crown Room with San Luis Obispo’s Pancho & The Wizards on Wednesday, November 6th. Tickets and info can be found here.
