This weekend’s music scene just got a lot more interesting: Sammy Hagar and Kris Kristofferson are making surprise appearances at Cabo Wabo in Harvey’s Lake Tahoe on Saturday, March 26, taking the stage with a family crew full of famous names.
Hagar and Kristofferson will be sitting in with the Appalachian Murder Bunnies, a duo made up of Hagar’s son and Kristofferson’s daughter. Andrew Hagar pairs with Kelly Kristofferson, playing self-described “psychedelic folk rock.”
“The band actually goes on at 7, and the fireworks start thereafter with Sammy Hagar, [Kristofferson], Aaron [Hagar], and maybe some other guests,” said John Packer, spokesman for Harrah’s and Harveys Lake Tahoe. Aaron Hagar is a South Shore resident.
Army vet, actor and musician, Kris Kristofferson has penned some of the beloved tunes of Americana music, like “Me and Bobby McGee” and “Sunday Morning Going Down.” Kristofferson joined forces with Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash in 1985 to form the Highwaymen. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2004.
Kristofferson has also appeared in many films over the years, such as “Flash Point,” “Blade,” and the 2001 remake of “Planet of the Apes,” among other titles. He won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his work in the 1976 film “A Star is Born,” in which he co-starred with Barbara Streisand.
Well-known as the front man of Van Halen from 1985 to 1996, Sammy Hagar went on to successful careers as both a solo musician and a businessman, founding and developing Cabo Wabo Cantina in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, along with an accompanying tequila brand.
In 2008, the Red Rocker founded supergroup Chickenfoot with Michael Anthony (bass) of Van Halen, Chad Smith (drums) of Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Joe Satriani (guitar). Chickenfoot will be playing a two-night run at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe in early May.
Hagar appeared with his newest project, the Circle, at Harveys Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena in 2014 and 2015. Chickenfoot also played the South Shore Room at Harrah’s in 2012.
Sammy Hagar recently revealed to Rolling Stone that he is very much open to mending fences with Van Halen. While the shades-sporting frontman obviously has a full slate already, other new projects could be around the corner.
