The year 2022 could be the greatest in the storybook life of Stephen Curry. He won his first NBA finals Most Valuable Player award as he led the Golden State Warriors to the league championship for the fourth time. During the season, he broke the NBA’s all-time record for most three-point baskets. And he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Davidson College, which will retire his jersey number, 30, in a dual ceremony.
What more could Curry possibly achieve? Oh, there’s that thing up at Lake Tahoe.
Curry’s participation in Tahoe’s celebrity golf tournament, American Century Championship, was announced today. Curry’s father, Dell, and brother, Seth, also will play the July 6-10 NBC-televised event at Tahoe Edgewood Golf Course in Stateline.
A two-time NBA MVP, Curry’s penchant for hot shooting streaks on the hardwood can crossover onto grass. He made a serious run, sinking putts down the stretch in the 2017 Tahoe tournament before finishing in fourth, where he has landed three times. He was in the second leaders’ group on the final day in 2021 when he went cold, shooting three double bogeys. But competitor that he is, Curry made an eagle on 18 to finish ninth. 2022 will mark Curry’s 10th ACC appearance. Caesars Sportsbook lists Curry among the top eight favorites with his odds at 12-1.
Curry is one of the major draws of the tournament, along with Justin Timberlake, Aaron Rogers, Charles Barkley, Michael Strahan and Tony Romo. A record attendance 60,530 was set in 2019. Fans were not permitted to attend 2020’s tourney during the start of the Covid pandemic. Last year, fans attended, but they could not get autographs.
Top contenders this year include defending champion Vinny Del Negro, 2020 winner Mardy Fish, three-time winner Mark Mulder, John Smoltz, Romo and Annika Sorenstam, who won 72 times on the LPGA Tour.
Jim McMahon and Jack Wagner, who have played in each of the previous 32 tournaments, are scheduled to return this year.
On Friday, July 8, after the first of three rounds, an EDM duo, The Chainsmokers, will perform across the street from the course at Harveys Outdoor Arena.
