“The Twist” is the quintessential hit song.
Chubby Checker’s cover of Hank Ballard’s tune in 1960 is still ranked No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100’s all time top song chart. It made him a millionaire and changed his career path from a Frank Sinatra-like crooner to vanguard of the new music called rock ‘n’ roll.
The 72-year-old singer performs Saturday, Dec. 21, in the venerable South Shore Room at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe, a venue he has doubtless played for a half-century. Tickets are $55.
Chubby Checker is the first of a winter of shows at Harrah’s which includes a few surprises. Country singer Kellie Pickler plays Feb. 15 and reggae pioneers the Wailers are in Tahoe onstage Feb. 22, and Canadian rockers Walk Off The Earth play March 1. Tainted Love, a tribute band to the 1980s, plays Dec. 28 and Stax legend Booker T. Jones performs Jan. 18.
