Allen LeRoy Hug, singer-songwriter Tennessee Kamanski’s new band, has just released two new singles, “Steady” and” Saturnine Boy.” The band is the fused dream of Kamanski and fellow San Diego native songwriter Sarah De La Isla. Kamanski calls it “ethereal folk rock,” an amalgamation of Big Star, the Everly Brothers, Cocteau Twins, Fionn Regan and Kate Bush.
“Our tunes have vocal harmonies at the forefront, with intertwining guitar melodies and thoughtful lyrics,” Kamanski said. “We love to record live, and the songs reflect the playful energy in the studio.”
The first song, “Steady,” is what I’d imagine angels or Odysseus’ Sirens singing might sound… fragile, soft and breezy. Emphatic drums keep the song moving, as heavenly vocals soar above the beat:
“Sell my brass buttons and my silver shoes
whatever you like
Melt them down if there is something you could use
All my promises are made to a patient silence, I’m just waiting to hear back.”
As for “Saturnine Boy,”I’ll admit it, I had to look up Saturnine (“slow and gloomy”). It wasn’t gloomy to me. At the end of the song, Kamanski and De La Isla sing, “I’ll carry your heart in mine,” and the trill of their voices at the end made my heart flutter! That’s how I’d expect angels to sing!
Both songs are now available anywhere people buy or stream music, including iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, Tidal, Apple Music and more. Check out photos of the band on Instagram at @allenleroyhug.
