Sacramento-based indie rockers Sun Valley Gun Club will be performing at St. James Infirmary with local acts Common Mishap and Rachael McElhiney tonight, June 24. The free show starts at 8 p.m.
Their latest release “The Water, The Stars” on Lauren Records sees the band playing with a quiet ferocity underneath plain-spoken introspection; the result is thrillingly heart-breaking. Lead vocalist Evan Bailey is part Jerry Joseph, part Pedro The Lion, and wholly genuine as he sings of love lost and remembered, unadorned.
Where Bailey’s vocals are straight forward and workman-like, the band is anything but. Songs such as “If You Would Only Wait”, its reprise “I Saw A Pigeon”, and “Time” draw on the group’s use of dynamics and soundscaping that keep the album breathing, writhing, lunging forward.
The show is not to be missed.
