It might be easy to think of punk in terms of younger bands writing polished hooks for Tik Tok videos, however some of the older bands are still alive and kicking, and no less opposed to authoritarian politics as they were when they themselves were amongst the young bands.
The Summer of Discontent Tour will see Boston’s Dropkick Murphys who formed in 1996, and LA band Bad Religion who were coming up during the Reagan administration, bring their political punk to the Grand Sierra Resort’s Grand Theatre on Saturday, July 26th.
Dropkick Murphys has always worn their working class roots on their sleeves, with songs championing and recognizing the lives and struggles of everyday people. The band has shown their musical versatility and talent through acoustic albums and onstage instrumentation that veers far beyond the standard guitar/bass/drums punk format and have just released a new album, For The People, with timely lyrics addressing current events.
Having formed in 1980, Bad Religion, fronted by zoologist and lecturer Greg Graffin, has consistently put out thought provoking music that has influenced many of the biggest names in skate punk, not to mention outlasted many of them too. With 17 albums in their catalog, the group continues to headline major punk festivals and is currently at work on the follow up to their 2019 Age Of Unreason album.
The two bands are co headlining 2025’s Summer of Discontent Tour, heading to Reno on July 26th.
