30 years ago, Los Angeles rap group Cypress Hill released Black Sunday, an album born of Hefty bags full of cannabis setting its chilled out haze over the studios while the group recorded what would go on to become one of the classic recordings of the era.
“Insane In The Brain” to this day remains the most recognizable track of the group’s career, however Black Sunday was a start-to-finish classic touching on themes of street karma, gang life, and getting high.
The group’s bass heavy flow ruled the streets, so much so in fact that a cartoon show in its then seventh season (for reference the show is now in its 36th season) called The Simpsons wrote the group into an episode…
Well nearly 30 years later, life is imitating art and Cypress Hill are performing with the London Symphony Orchestra which will stream live to various movie theaters before following the three night event with a performance in Reno’s Grand Sierra Resort & Casino’s Grand Theatre with the Reno Philharmonic.
Their Friday, April 4th appearance in Reno will see them performing over the Reno Phil under the direction of Associate Conductor Dr. Jason Altieri. This boundary pushing is what has earned Cypress Hill a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and allowed the group to continue recording and performing now nearly 4 decades on with original members.
