Photographer’s notebook: Jazz trumpet master Chris Botti is a class act. He has fun intermingling with the audience and is quite comfortable onstage. Botti brought a 9-piece band to the venerable South Shore Room at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe on Saturday, Feb. 9, and all the musicians were at the top of their game. It was among the best collections of artists I’ve ever witnessed in a single performance. “Hey Mr. Photographer,” he called out at one point. “I’d like you to come up onstage. The drummer (Lee Pearson) is about to do something special.” Before Pearson’s impressive solo,  I took the opportunity to walk around the stage and take several shots from different angles. Botti treated me as a photographer with much respect and allowed anyone to shoot the whole show, which is such a change from the norm, and it allowed me to get some great stuff, for sure. What kept going through my mind while onstage was that I really should dress better when I shoot. Botti is touring in support of his latest album, “Impressions.” He left a great impression, indeed.

  1. Wonderful pictures. I was there and it was the third time I’ve seen him and I think the best. Well worth going through the snow storm and having to spend an extra day on the hill and can hardly wait for the next time.
