Portugal. The Man

Portugal. The Man isn’t from Portugal nor is it a singular man. The Alaskan trio is known for its unusually punctuated name and genre-bending tunes that skirt the border between psychedelic and alternative rock. Catch Portugal. The Man’s show at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe in the South Shore Room on March 10, 2017.

As many bands do, Portugal. The Man developed from a side project of one of its members. Lead singer and guitarist John Gourley teamed up with bassist Zach Carouthers in the band’s infancy, adding and subtracting members over the last decade plus until they distilled down to a trio. In 2008, Gourley received AP Magazine’s award for Best Vocalist of the Year.

Portugal. The Man expanded its fan base through appearances at popular music festivals like Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo and creative use of social media outlets to build interest and hype ahead of album releases. Their most recent album, 2013’s “Evil Friends” cracked the Top 10 on the U.S. Alternative charts.

The indie band has broken into the mainstream music world with tracks on the popular TV series “The Walking Dead” and even Taco Bell commercials. The band’s popular singles include “People Say” and “Purple, Yellow, Red and Blue.”
