Reno grunge slaystresses Worm Shot are back with their second EP, and from start to finish, this record hits like a single prolonged punch to the face!
While the group has well worn their cloak of piercing vocals and occasional banshee wails, and layered these over a roughly alternative influenced brand of rock that leans much more toward a sense of raucousness over a bland sense of polished refinement, the group’s 5 song, 12 minute Blood Sisters EP has pushed that boundary in a more well rounded direction.
The song “Jane Doe” takes its cues from alternative bands like Hole whipping a frantic delivery over guitars that meander from breakneck and distorted to weighted pauses and back again, whereas “Haha” fully embraces late 90’s sounding Riot Grrrl in all of its standoffish messiness. The intro to “Swiss Army Girl” has a bouncy catchiness reminiscent of Joy Division’s “Digital” before Worm Shot’s vocal harmonies crescendo into a fever pitch that ties together this recording’s demure aggressiveness.
Worthy of mention is also that the band has tapped on visuals by local photographer, Trevor Castillo, to create a hypnotically stark graphic tone for this recording before you even hit Play.
Probably one of the most exciting young projects playing in the Reno area right now, Blood Sisters represents a leap in sonic output from Worm Shot while retaining that rough-around-the-edges delivery that sets the group apart from the pack in originality and not tempering their sound for the sake of simple digestibility.
