Longtime Mother Hips and Green Leaf Rustlers guitar player and singer Greg Loiacono has released a new single and video titled “Bound To Fall.” It’s a duet with Los Angeles-based folk singer Jamie Drake, and is their second single release, after 2019’s “San Felipe.” The song was recorded at Coyote Hearing Studios in Oakland, California, and engineered by Charles James Gonzalez. Scott Hirsch mixed the song, and Anthony Puglisi mastered it. The track features keyboards by Wilco’s Mikael Jorgensen.
I dig the Muscle Shoals vibe coming out of this one. It feels like something from the late 1960s in good ol’ 6/8. Drake blends really well vocally with Loiacono. There’s some dreamy chimes on guitar, and some real nice background harmonies to add a pleasing texture. Jorgensen adds a perfect cosmic touch on the keys. It’s a very well put together track.
Says Loiacono: “A few years back I had become obsessed with a recording called ‘Please Stay’ by The Cryin’ Shames. It inspired me to dive back into old records of singers singing heartbreak songs from way back. I hoped to convey that lonely, far away sound on this record. Once Jamie and I started working on the song together we focused in on this unrequited love that drives the singer almost into a sense of delusion. It was really enjoyable finding ways to convey this through words and melody.”
“I think we’ve truly captured a specific, vintage, musical world in an authentic way,” Drake said. “We were visited by a classic-feeling melody as we began to write and it brought a bit of magic to our session — along with plenty of failed relationship experiences to contextually pack into the lyrics. I remember laughing while suggesting the line about listening to Steely Dan and hearing the saxophone play. It’s such a real detail and I’m sure someone out there will relate.”
