Evening Spirits meanders through twee indie on new Letters to Marie LP

November 2024

Playing Letters To Marie, the new 8 track recording by Evening Spirits, makes it easy to imagine a meandering trip through city streets covered in a soft hazy evening glow to clear one’s mind. The bouncing, almost twee indie rock of the band evokes exterior scenes and their overlap with the activity going on inside one’s head.

With sincere lyrics merging the physical and ethereal laid over an indie pop twang, Evening Spirits come off as smirkingly optimistic. Letting bended guitar tones lead through these rollicking songs, the band shows that they can burst into rollicking explosiveness such as on the song, “Divine Intervention”, the album’s closer, or veer into almost folk territory as exemplified by the harmonica infused “Hunny.”

On their first album, the Reno four piece tend to keep it straightforward, serving up bursts of unpretentious indie music the evokes that ungraspable space where the outside world and inner intellectualizing meet.
