JJ Grey & Mofro played on May 22 an amazing, soulful, funny and heartfelt set in Cargo at the Whitney Peak Hotel.
The depth of JJ’s voice, literally and otherwise, is indeed intense. He puts a spell on the crowd as he dances around the stage singing and encouraging everyone to sing with him. The horns were singing, too, and the drums kept on giving along with the sweet sounds of the keys, some sort of balance indeed!
You had to stop for a second and really listen, and then listen again, and say to yourself, “Wait, do they really sound this amazing, is it possible to feel the weight and then the lightness of words sung, words felt, notes played?”
The band is so tight, playing off of one another and blending together, creating that wonderful sound. JJ Grey & Mofro left the stage, JJ in his socks as he had taken off his boots, and the crowd was left with this. It does a soul good to be filled with music that moves you, music that makes you smile.
It was Grey’s second Cargo appearance. He performed here in November with Marc Broussard, Luther Dickinson and Anders Osborne as the Southern Soul Assembly.

The Mark Sexton band played a short and sweet set before JJ took the stage.
Mark is both professional and personable with his guitar playing and his singing, and the band belts out song after song as the crowd eats it up. A Reno-based band, Mark had a whole lot of very happy fans in the crowd. And those who have never heard the Mark Sexton Band were seemingly happy as well. His presence on stage is comfortable and inviting.
