Advance tickets are $20. \nEven in trying times\, “there is no love without electricity.” Electricity is the fourth and most progressive album from Ibibio Sound Machine\, and like all good Afrofuturist stories\, it begins with an existential crisis. “It’s darker than anything we’ve done previously\,” says Eno Williams\, the group’s singer. “That’s because it grew out of the turbulence of the past year. It inhabits an edgier world.” \nElectricity was produced by the Grammy Award– and Mercury Prize–nominated British synthpop group Hot Chip\, a collaboration born out of mutual admiration watching each other on festival stages\, as well as a shared love of Francis Bebey and Giorgio Moroder. The fruits of their labor reveal a gleaming\, supercharged\, Afrofuturist blinder. Electricity is the first album Ibibio Sound Machine have made with external producers since the group’s formation in London in 2013 by Williams and saxophonist Max Grunhard. True\, 2017’s Uyai featured mixdown guests including Dan Leavers\, aka Danalogue\, the keyboard jedi in future-jazz trio The Comet Is Coming\, but Hot Chip and Ibibio Sound Machine worked together more deeply throughout the process\, collaborating fully. Along the way\, the team conjured a kaleidoscope of delights that include resonances of Jonzun Crew\, Grace Jones\, William Onyeabor\, Tom Tom Club\, Kae Tempest\, Keith LeBlanc\, The J.B.’s\, Jon Hassell’s “Fourth World\,” and Bootsy Collins.

This will be China Cats first appearance at Crystal Bay since 2018. \nThis Bay Area tribute band performs the songs of the Grateful Dead with spirited jams that carry their own genuine personality while paying homage to their musical forefathers. The band has featured many guests and shared the stage with Jerry Garcia Band organist Melvin Seals several times since 2014; as well as former Grateful Dead vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux.\nLead guitarist Matt Hartle brings experience from collaborations with Dead-family musicians\, has an acclaimed body of original material\, and is a founding member of Santa Cruz-based Shady Groove. Matt has shared the stage with guitarists including Henry Kaiser and Stu Allen\, and is a current member of Painted Mandolin with Joe Craven. Scott has several solo albums to his credit with his band\, Scott Cooper & the Barrelmakers. Keyboardist Steve Sofranko is a regular in Stu Allen & Mars Hotel. Roger formerly played bass in David Gans & the Sycamore Slough String Band and has performed with artists such as Michael Kang\, David Nelson\, Henry Kaiser and Frank Wakefield. Drummer Michael Owens is an in-demand player who is versed in New Orleans\, jazz\, reggae and African drumming. \n“The China Cats aren’t a cover band\,” says Nicholas Meriweather\, former archivist of the Grateful Dead collection at UC Santa Cruz. “They approach the Dead’s work with same kind of reverence and sophistication that the Dead themselves showed in their own forays into American roots music.” \n“When you listen the Cats\,” Meriweather adds\, “old favorites take on new lives\, revealing facets that will delight and amaze even jaded listeners. Emmer always brings three guitars to the stage\, and Clarke will have with him at least three. \n“There’s never too many guitars\,” Emmer said. \n“I’ll definitely be taking my 335 Gibson\,” Clarke said. “I’ll also bring a couple of Strats as they’re my main guitars these days.” \nClarke’s fiery colored Gibson is the inspiration for his band Big Red\, which includes South Lake Tahoe singer-harp player Carolyn Dolan and most recently bassist Glade Rasmussen\, who is a new member of the Buddy Emmer Blues Band\, along with drummer Kevin Clark and original keyboardist Mark Ishikawa.
