SUMMARY:Bluesdays: Laurie Morvan Band
DESCRIPTION:Laurie Morvan Band debuts at Bluesdays in the Village of Palisades Tahoe. \nTalk about true blues: Laurie Morvan’s hardscrabble path to the bandstand began years before she started playing music. \n“I grew up on Bittersweet Lane in New Lenox\, Illinois\, and dad walked out. That is 100 percent true\,” Morvan said. “Is there more of a blues beginning than that?” \nA fiery lead guitarist and prolific songwriter\, Morvan’s recording career began in 1997\, so her “Bittersweet” childhood is long known to blues listeners. But this summer marks the first time Morvan and her band will appear at Bluesdays. \nTruckee resident and national touring artist Mighty Mike Schermer performed with Morvan on a few occasions. \n“She’s badass\,” Schermer said. “She’s more in the blues-rock idiom but what I’ve always admired about Laurie is her energy. She just puts the pedal to the metal and really takes no prisoners. You don’t really need to question whether she’s good or not. She’s gonna let you know right away. You’re going to need to go there and find out.” \nA Southern California resident\, Morvan has had a few nearby shows in 2022\, including Reno\, Folsom and headlined Sunday\, May 29\, at Lakeview Commons at South Lake Tahoe’s Big Blues Music & Blues Festival. \n

SUMMARY:The Tens
DESCRIPTION:The Tens debut at Alibi Ale Works – Incline Public House on Friday\, July 1. \nThe LA based outfit emerged in 2014. They devoted their early years to performance\, busking nightly and picking up weekly residencies around the city\, being humbly likened to groups like The Band\, Grateful Dead and Little Feat. Their improvisation and groove has since taken them across the country several times\, establishing them as a premier touring spectacle.\nIn 2016\, The Tens audaciously tracked a live\, direct to vinyl record in Nashville’s Welcome to 1979. The process required them to cut each side of the double LP in a single take. The result was an honest\, sonic rendering of the young\, ambitious band on a beautiful day in the South.\nIn early 2019\, the band was discovered by producer and owner of Pattern Recording Studio\, Thomas Rojo. Rojo and The Tens spent the next 17 months writing and tracking their debut studio LP\, Broken Romantic. The album is an emotional trip through the disillusionment of self\, dreams and reality. During production\, the record caught the ear of Grammy-winning producer J.J. Blair (June Carter and Johnny Cash\, Smokey Robinson\, The Who) who joined to mix the project. The Tens’ introspective songwriting put through Blair’s aesthetic filter was enriched yet again in the final layer of production\, by the mastering skills of Peter Doell (Miles Davis\, Celine Dion\, The Beach Boys).

SUMMARY:Valhalla Tahoe Theater: 'Silent Sky'
DESCRIPTION:Valhalla Tahoe’s summer production is “Silent Sky.” \nHow vast is the universe? How far away are the stars? “Silent Sky” tells the true story of 19th century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt and her fellow female researchers or “computers” in the Harvard University observatory who set the standard still used today for measuring distances in space while discovering thousands of stars. Twenty years before women’s suffrage\, the “computers” pursue their passion for astronomy in a society that limits women’s roles while credit for their discoveries are dismissed or claimed by male astronomers. Through the voices of Henrietta and her friends we learn about the strength\, perseverance and and the light that connects us all. This play offers the perfect opportunity to reflect on women’s lives in the 1920s when Valhalla was built.

SUMMARY:Bluesdays: Mark Hummel Band’s Night at the Fillmore
DESCRIPTION:Bluesdays in The Village at Palisades Tahoe presents Mark Hummel Band’s Night at the Fillmore. \nHarmonica virtuoso Mark Hummel has always appreciated\, celebrated and showcased the great musicians of earlier and modern times. For this year’s Bluesdays performance\, shows from the Fillmore West during promoter Bill Graham’s early years. And he has an ensemble to pull it off. \nGuitarist Gary Vogenson (currently with Angela Strehli’s Blues Broads) was mentored by Mike Bloomfield\, a guitarist famous for introducing blues to white America with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and shocking Bob Dylan’s followers with his electric guitar at the Newport Folk Festival. Vogenson also played with Elvin Bishop\, New Riders of the Purple Sage\, Norton Buffalo and Maria Muldaur. Drummer Gary Silva played with Elvin Bishop\, Ron Thompson’s the Resistors\, Charlie Musselwhite and Junior Walker. Bassist Bob Welsh\, who also plays guitar and keyboards\, is a younger member in the group\, and a current player with Elvin Bishop’s Big Fun Trio. \nHummel has released more than 20 solo albums and more than another 20 collaborations and compilations. His latest is “Mark Hummel presents the East Bay Blues Vault\, 1976-88.” \n“They are early recordings I played on and people who have been big influences on me\,” said Hummel who plays on 11 of the 22 songs. \nArtists on the album include Ron Thompson\, Franck “Paris Slim” Goldwasser\, Sonny Rhodes\, Brownie McGhee\, J.J. Malone\, Mississippi Johnny Waters\, Cool Papa\, Boogie Jake\, Little Willie Littlefield\, Robert Kelton and Nancy Wright.” \nThose artists and Hummel regularly performed in those years at the Eli’s Mile High Club and Deluxe Inn in Oakland and The Playboy and Savoy clubs in Richmond. Those venues are a contrast to the outdoor Village at Palisades Tahoe\, a ski resort and site of the 1960 Winter Olympic Games. \n“It’s pretty different but it sure is fun\,” Hummel said. “It’s great because we always see people we haven’t seen in a long time. I’ve brought up so many good musicians that people know that I will bring up a great band.”

SUMMARY:Kanekoa
DESCRIPTION:Maui’s Kanekoa will perform Saturday\, June 25\, at the Crystal Bay Casino. Ticket sales begin Friday. \nKanekoa’s instrumentation is three ukuleles and a cajon\, and in the band’s 25 years it’s captured the attention of folks such as Los Lobos\, Gregg Allman and the Grateful Dead’s Bill Kruetzman. \nKruetzman first saw the band when it opened for 7 Walkers. He later hired Kanekoa to play at his wedding in Kauai. \n“They are the Hawaiian Grateful Dead\,” Kruetzman said. \nDavid Hidalgo of Los Lobos said\, “These guys scare me\, they are that good.” \nTwo of the members – Kaulana Kanekoa (lead vocals\, rhythm ukulele) and Travis Rice (cajon) — grew up in Reno. “Uncle” Don Lopez plays fretless U-bass and the lead uke is played by Vince Esquire\, who joined the Allman Brother onstage and toured and recorded with Gregg Allman. \nKanekoa’s new album\, “Songs from the Great Disruption” includes contributions from Jake Shimabukuro\, G. Love and Steve Berlin\, who produced the album. \n“Kanekoa is one of those special bands where years and years of hard work give them the license to create seemingly effortless beauty\, but behind the scenes there’s a lot of sweat equity\,” said Berlin\, who plays saxophone and keyboards for Los Lobos. “Their peaceful and gorgeous songs are uniquely suited for these unsettling times\, and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of working with them on it.”

SUMMARY:The Gold Souls
DESCRIPTION:The Gold Souls perform Saturday at the Alibi Ale Works – Incline Public House. \nThe Gold Souls are bringing the driving grooves of funk\, the rich textures of soul\, and the compelling storytelling of the blues to the Northern California scene and beyond. Drawing from a wide range of influences and experiences\, they deliver captivating lyrics and fresh arrangements over a vintage sound. Led by the dynamic Juniper Waller\, the group is made up of young talent hailing from the Bay and Sacramento areas. With Darius Upshaw on guitar\, Alex Severson on the keys\, Billy D. Thompson on the drums\, and Avery Jeffry on bass\, each member has a hand in writing and song composition\, making The Gold Souls a truly collaborative effort. The Gold Souls burst on the Sacramento music scene in early 2017\, and are swiftly becoming one of the most promising new talents in the area.\nThey released their self-titled five song EP in May 2017\, and toured down the California coast soon after in support of the fresh blues\, soul-funk EP. Their next single\, “Nobody\,” was released in late 2017 and was featured on Apple Music Blues’ Hot Tracks list. They released their first full length album “Good to Feel” in June 2018\, an album that stuck to their core oath to never sacrifice the groove.\nTheir next single\, “True Blue” was produced/engineered by multi-Grammy winner Timothy Bloom (Smokey Robinson) and was released in February 2019. That April\, the band went on tour through southern California\, Arizona\, New Mexico\, Texas\, and New Orleans.\n2020 hardly slowed the Souls down\, as they spent the year working on their forthcoming second album and live-streaming many concerts to their fans as they sheltered in place. They released their latest single\, “Got It” in May of 2020 which promoted a message of community empowerment and unity. The single was accompanied by a collaborative music video with animation from artists all around the world. The Gold Souls rang in 2021 with a live-streamed NYE show at The Center for the Arts in Grass Valley.\nThe Gold Souls’ new album Downtown Sound came out Oct.29\, 2021 to rave reviews. 2022 and beyond look promising for the band\, as they get back to their busy schedule of traveling around Northern California and rocking stages for the live music-starved masses.

Their musical journey has taken them from all-night North Carolina house parties to late night TV talk shows (Conan O’Brien\, The Tonight Show)\, from performing at the base of Mt. Fuji in Japan to rockin’ out for the inmates at North Carolina correctional facilities. They’ve shared a stage with many musical luminaries including Link Wray\, Loretta Lynn\, Hasil Adkins and Patti Smith. Their music has been featured in movies and TV\, parodied by Weird Al\, and used to sell everything from diamonds to pork sausage. In 2014 the band was honored by the Southern Folklife Collection at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill with an exhibition featuring their music and cultural contributions. Their legendary live shows are a testament to the therapeutic powers of foot-stomping\, butt-shaking rock and roll and what Rolling Stone dubbed “a hell raising rock and roll party.”

SUMMARY:The Two Tracks
DESCRIPTION:The Two Tracks\, a nationally touring Americana 4-piece band from Sheridan\, Wyoming\, will debut at Cypress Reno on Wednesday\, June 22. Charlie Marks opens at 8:30 p.m. \nAmerican Songwriter has this to say about The Two Tracks: “They avoid many of the cliches and gimmicks that have grown common in the Americana world while still championing a natural\, Earth-grown sound. To hear an acoustic quartet reach a level of dynamic and thematic intensity like The Two Tracks do is an immeasurably rewarding experience. It’s pure musicianship\, it’s pure excellence\, it’s pure Americana.” \nThe Two Tracks are led by the singing and songwriting talents of husband and wife duo Julie and Dave Huebner\, with their songs alternating between emotional and natural images of small town rural American life. Hailing from the eastern side of the Bighorn Mountains\, the band has traversed the country bringing their joyful\, unique sound to stages big and small. Julie’s enthusiasm on stage perfectly complements Dave’s fluid cello and guitar playing much like the effortless blend of their harmonies. Backed by the additional harmonies of Taylor Phillps on bass and Fernando Serna on drums\, the band released their third album Cheers to Solitude\, produced by Will Kimbrough and mixed by Trina Shoemaker\, to rave reviews from Relix\, Glide\, American Songwriter\, Americana UK and many others.  The album spent several weeks on the Top 40 Americana Radio Chart\, and the Top 10 Alt-Country Specialty Chart.

SUMMARY:Jeff Watson at Harrah's Tuesday Night Blues
DESCRIPTION:Jeff Watson is the featured artist at Harrah’s Tuesday Night Blues\, 8 p.m. until about midnight\, hosted by the Buddy Emmer Blues Band. \nSacramento hasn’t produced a whole lot of rock guitarists\, but it has two who go by the name Jeff Watson. \nThe better-known Jeff Watson is a founding member of the band Night Ranger. \n“If I had a quarter for every time I’ve been mistaken for that Jeff Watson\, I’d be a rich man\,” said the Jeff Watson who will play this week at Tuesday Night Summer Blues at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe. \nWatson\, who started an auto body business 30 years ago “in case I didn’t make it as a rock star\,” has learned his own image was inadvertently posted on the other Jeff Watson’s Facebook page. He’s even had people ask him to autograph the other Jeff Watson’s photo. \n“We’re from the same area and are about the same age\, but he has lots of hair and I don’t\,” the Tahoe-bound Watson joked. \nWatson says he is blues influenced but plays more of a contemporary rock style. He became infatuated with electric guitar when as a 10 year old he attended his step-father’s rehearsal with a country western group. He started playing on a $15 Montgomery Wards Airliner guitar. “Then I moved up to a Sears model\,” he said. \nA lifelong Sacramento resident\, Watson played with a southern rock band\, Merlin Sights\, then a rock band\, Power Glide. \nBut the boy who grew up in rock’s heyday of the 1960s and early ’70s\, became a disenchanted man in 1984. He didn’t touch a guitar for 15 years. \n“I was burned out with Duran Duran\, Men at Work and ’80s Spandex hair bands\,” he said. \nBut he got “bit by the bug” again at a local blues jam\, where he played with a borrowed guitar. Now he has a roomful of guitars and amps. He plans to bring a Les Paul to Lake Tahoe.
