A Grammy Award-winning, guitar-slinging husband and wife team delivering soulful blues, supported by vocalists Mike Mattison, Mark Rivers and Alecia Chakour, saxophonist Kebbi Williams, keyboard and flute player Kofi Burbridge, trumpeter Ephraim Owens, trombonist Elizabeth Lea, bassist Tim Lefebvre and drummer-percussionists J.J. Johnson and Tyler Greenwell. Need we elaborate? The Tedeschi Trucks Band delighted a packed crowd at the MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa in Lake Tahoe on Saturday, Sept. 10. Fresh off a performance in Los Angeles to help the Blues Foundation pay tribute to B.B. King, and following back-to-back shows in the Bay Area, Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks gathered their supporting cast and headed to Tahoe. They must enjoy that mountain air, having closed out the High Sierra Music Festival in July with a memorable set. Lake Tahoe fans enjoyed more of the same Saturday night.
Photographer’s notebook: Susan Tedeschi is certainly the feature, with her sultry voice and superb guitar skills rivaling Bonnie Raitt’s. Derek Trucks takes a backstage position for the first half of the performance only to later step to the front and show why he’s such a renowned force. The group as a whole fills the stage with a big presence, like watching a Stevie Wonder show to me. Tedeschi commented on a picture on the wall of B.B. King while back stage and when it came to one of the songs in their set she again reminisced of King and how it’s an honor to follow in his footsteps at this venue. I think it really hit home to her. Each musician is a super talent led by two superstars. This was my favorite show of the year and you know I see a lot of them. — Larry Sabo
